Mordant's for Natural Dyeing
Mordants play an essential role in the natural dyeing process by helping natural dyes bond effectively with textile fibres. In natural dyeing, both the dye molecules and many textile fibres carry similar charges, which can make direct dye absorption difficult. Mordants act as a binding agent that improves the affinity between the natural dye and the fabric, resulting in better dye uptake, deeper shades, and improved colour fastness. Mordants are widely used in textile dyeing, handloom dyeing, craft dyeing, and natural textile processing to fix the color onto fibres and enhance the durability of natural dyes. This process is particularly important when dyeing plant-based fibres such as cotton, linen, and jute, where mordanting helps achieve brighter and more stable shades.
There are two commonly used mordanting methods in natural dyeing:
Pre-Mordanting – The fabric is treated with the mordant before the dyeing process. This is the most widely used method and helps prepare the fibre to absorb natural dyes more effectively.
Post-Mordanting – The fabric is dyed first and then treated with the mordant afterwards to improve shade development and color fixation.

Copper Sulfate- It saddens the colors and brings out greens. It is a good additive. Used alone, one ounce will mordant a pound of wool. Rinse fiber well, store wet or dry. we can choose to save a few coins and use these as your mordant. Copper produces lovely greens!

Iron (ferrous sulfate) is called copperas. It saddens or darken colors, bringing out green shades. Usually cotton and wool is dyed before mordanting with iron when darker shades are required.

Alum (potassium aluminum sulfate) is the most common mordant. We can add alum to the dye bath, mix well, then add yarn or fibre to get mordanted. It is often used in canning and preserving also inexpensive and safe to use. It improves light and wash fastness of all natural dyes and keeps colours clear.
